Ive got an adaptec raid card, and finally managed to get it to build a raid 5. But the OS doesnt seem to show anything under fdisk -l with regards to the new array?
lspci shows the card ok
00:13.0 RAID bus controller: Adaptec AAC-RAID (rev 01)
Do i need to do something in the kernel to allow raid ?
sometimes cheaper 'software' raid cards aren't recognised by linuxes because it is generally assumed that linux raid does a better job than the cheapo raid cards.
if this is the case you may as well just use the software raid.
*I make the assumption that you didn't just go out and spend a few hundred quid on a decent raid card without checking hardware compatibility
It retails for a couple of hundred quid but I got it 2nd hand. And it lists linux as supported.

It would be worth double checking aacraid is allowed in your kernel configuration before we try anything else I'd think.
you should see it in lsmod

Im not really sure about the kernel, its my weakest thing...
How would I go from a manually compiled kernel, to a genkernel setup?
If you've tuned your manual kernel there's no harm in sticking with it and just enabling aacraid support.
On gentoo I've always used genkernel just because whilst you sacrifice a little on performance, it's just worked for me. (and moving between Intel/AMD was quite clever 'just working')
Possibly one to ask on the gentoo forums to get more opinions!
(or you could just emerge genkernel, let it run and put it in along side your default boot environment and try it and see if it works) * usual caveats of I'm sorry if it explodes.
Any idea where it is in the menuconfig ? I cant seem to find it..
