I'm trying to setup a FreeNAS server out of an old desktop so we can put off buying a proper storage server.
It's all up and running with RAID5 however when i try to browse to a share from a windows client I get asked for login even tho I have enabled anonymous login in FreeNAS, whats really irritating is core education blocking google search terms such as 'freeNAS anonymous login' you'd think they'd turn it off in the summer hols.
anyway I am able to login to freeNAS but when i try to copy files to the share is says there not enough disk space which is wrong, I dont understant unix file permissions and am totally clueless on freeNAS only started this yesterday.
I take it you have setup a share and mounted it correctly ?
If you are unsure on the unix file permissions then use the inbuilt file manager that came with the latest version - QuiXplorer. Also have you enabled CIFS ?
Learn FreeNAS [ The book is well worth it btw ]
And if you DL the manual there will be quick start guide:
FreeNAS: The Free NAS Server

im running the latest stable version, dont think i have the inbuilt file manager im still getting familiar with it tho.
interestingly if i go services>CIFS and change it to anonymous then in windows navigate to \\freenas it says it cant find it (yes ive added the IP to my etc/hosts file)
if i change that to local or domain i get a prompt for username and password, then when loggin in get errors when copyiong files.
not sure if this just makes it more complex or anything but what about open filer ?
yeh i read about openfiler after just having set up free NAS i'd rather spend a little more time on this as if i go with open filer i will be waiting hours for the raid to rebuild itself.

found the cause of my headache,
the main share in Disks > mount point is in an error state
ive done it now,
had a similar problem to this guy: FreeNAS forum • View topic - Mount point status of UFS: Error - Retry
so reformatted my raid array, had to re mount it but remove the _ character from the share name this was causing the problem i think, after that the status was ok.
then i could configure the rest so i can now browse the share from my windows client, i had to enable active directory in access, and set up users etc.
just got to change the IP address to a static one and stick it in the server room. :D
Thanks for your help guys, if it wasnt for your suggestions i would have missed the problem for even longer
Be careful what drives you guys are using in your raid arrays as some especially seagate with various firmware versions don't place nicely in raid arrays as I've found out today.
