Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box.

We have just gone on to BT Broadband 4meg download 500k upload from ISDN @64kbps, so it will be a big difference .( we are out in the sticks about 3 miles from the exchange).
I have just built a 'Smoothwall Box' and I want to add the DG content filter but need my hand holding and talking through doing it can any one help please.
Regards Michael.

Have you tried the guide here?
If your going to struggle with that you may also want to look at www.censornet.com as well.
Re: Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box
Hello .
Thanks you for help and links.
I will put this on hold for few weeks because I'm upgrading the network to a domain and have my work cut out doing that for the first time by myself.
I will use smoothwall just for a firewall for now.
So my set up is BT internet> Linksys HG200 Router>Nic 1 smoothwall>firewall>Nic 2 >network switch.
now from the network I should be able to ping Nic 2 but not Nic 1 ?.
But I cannot ping Nic 2 and I get the internet on the workstations ?
Is this right ?.
any help please.
From Michael.
Re: Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box.
I am running a stock smoothwall here at the moment and I can ping the green interface. but if it is working anyway dont worry about it the firewall must be set not to respond to echo requests.
Re: Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box
Hi Chris H,
You are correct, I forgot that I set it to ignore echo requests (thinking that was for the internet only and not the Ethernet).
So I will enable it again while I'm setting up this domain.
Any one know how I can see the web interface set-up page for the router through the smoothwall box ?.
From Michael.
Re: Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box.
Your router probably passes through an IP to the external NIC of your Smoothie box. By default, I imagine Smoothie doesn't have the necessary ports open to accept connections on port 80.
Equally, the external connection on your router will not allow the admin interface to be accessed by default.
Re: Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box
hi.
I set up the router to connect to the internet by plugging it in one workstation on the network and using the routers web browsers set up screen, then set up smoothwall box to connect to the routers ip address.
Then unplugged the router from the network and plugged it into smoothwall box and that into the net work. set smoothwall up and re-booted both and the set up seem to have worked ok, but now I cannot see the routers details if I type in it's address.
From Michael.
Re: Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box.
Can you ping the router?
Don't know a lot about Smoothwall but do you maybe need to set up a rule that gets pages from that IP address directly (rather than any upstream proxies or anything)?
Re: Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box
Hello.
I will look into that soon , But I'm going to test the smoothwall box with 'Shields up fire wall tester from http://www.grc.com/default.htm because not sure if it working has it should be ...There are no logs in the 'fire wall log' ???
I have disabled the routers firewall but still no logs ?
The proxy has a log.
but the proxy does not seem to be working as it should .
May do a re-install of smoothwall and re set up..
Michael.
Re: Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box.
@tickmike: I have found IPCop (www.ipcop.org) to be more sensible than Smoothwall. If you are re-intalling you could give it a try and use the CopFilter addon to implement Dansgaurdian.
Re: Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box.
I know I am biased, but i'd seriously suggest having a look at the commercial SmoothWall product - it is greater than the sum of its parts, as it's NOT the same version of dansguardian you can download, and of course support is available.
If you're interested, call me. BTW, anyone mentioning EduGeek can have 10% off - tell them Tom Sent you!
Otherwise, you can always check out the forums on smoothwall.org - someone is usually going through the same process there!
Mods: if you believe this message is too commercial, feel free to squash it - I think it is reasonable though, someone has to mention all the options :)
Re: Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box
Hi. Tom
As I have put in some of my other posts This is a Reg.Charity and there is just no spare cash for things like this.
The Parents have a job to raise the money to pay the three Teachers and run the school. :(
All the ICT equipment has been donated :D ( and my time ).
So Tom If you guys at Smoothwall would like to Donate to the school some hardware or even the software to run a good system you can PM me as the contact for the school. (Fingers crossed)
Regards Michael.
Re: Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box.
PM sent - i'll see what I can do(!)
Re: Setting up Dansguardian content filter on smoothwall box.
What hardware are you using ?
I ask because smoothwall is often installed on ancient computers as a cheap firewall.
Dansguardian content filter needs a significantly more powerful system which you should not under estimate !
I have been using IPCOP, with the add-ons and I have now removed it because it was causing too many problems. 90% of stuff worked just fine and it did the job really well, but I think the problems may well have been caused by the hardware not being up to the job !
I think Spec was 400MHz Celeron, 64MB RAM, 4GB HDD.
Very simple websites all loaded without any problems, but anything a bit complicated just wouldn't load. Usually anything with asp. i.e. AA route finder, Google Earth, etc. etc. The sites were not blocked !, you just got site not found errors. Excluding the domain from the filter made no difference !
It could also of been ME not being up to the job I guess
but I only have limited time.
