EeePC questions.

Hi,

I run an ICT department at a school. We've just bought 16 EeePCs for the children to work with.

We are looking to stick with the default linux based OS but would like to see if we can do a few things.

Can we:

1) Have different usernames and passwords and tie it into our Windows network? For example when they are using the Windows PCs they login to a domain and have their own areas on the network to save work to. Would it be possible for them to do this?

2) Lock down the features the children are able to use? For example hide or turn off some of the icons that are avaible for them to click on.

3) erm, that's it.

It might be possible for point one but for point two im almost certain you cant do that. I might be wrong though.

I would imagine you could do point 2. Just gonna have to get your head in the code, and I'm not the one who can help you with that - although there are many linux guru's on here so stick about

in fact, if you look in the wiki there's a section about customizing the icons viewable on the menus

if you have to ask the question "can we do this?" then you might struggle.

It means messing around with LDAP to get it to work properly. I've seen the wiki on hiding icon on a per user basis. It's straight forward, but the thing with linux is, it's a steep learning curve, especially if you're a newbie!

Everything in linux is group based per se. It's fairly easy restricting access to most programs by configuring the users group memberships, there is a tutorial on linuxquestions.org

Never add any user to the wheel group at any cost.

I'd be more inclined to use them as convenient thin clients.

We'd decided to use them more as an internet terminal.

You can tie linux into a Windows AD quite easily with likewise open ( linky ) and best of all its free.

I have some old laptops that I have installed ubuntu onto just as basic web browsing machines and so that the teachers can do e-portal on if their laptop is being used somewhere else.

Installed likewise open on them last week and they can now log in to the w2k3 domain.
