Windows Software On Linux

Basically I want to set it up so everyone in the house has a login and can login to any of the computers and access all their files and also so I can control the software on everyones account and permissions.

Ah, I see, you would probably be better off with a windows server as someone said above if you want profiles + msi distribution etc.

I guess you need to ask whether its worth the hassle, but if its a learning experiment, go for it!

Windows Server is expensive, would I be able to get a used copy from Ebay?

Yep, you could buy a used server which may come with a copy of Server.

Alternatively, you could download a 180 day trial and play with that?

I suppose I could buy a used server but I would much rather play with Linux.

I've experienced this to. Have you tried compiling bochs from source on both machines? We found a marginal improvement over precompiled binaries. Also, there are several bochs settings that you can twiddle which might help, but I guess that you know that,

Hmm. Lots of people thinking about the same kind of thing these days - I'm planning to sort out my home system too. What sort of hardware were you thinking of? I'm going for a fanless motherboard, an as-near-to-silent case as I can find and some kind of hardware RAID controller - the ones that Stardom do seem pretty decent (you can find them on eBay), with RAID 1 and hot-swap capability. I'm going to simply install Ubuntu on my server, but a couple of people have asked me about similar systems and I figured I'll get them similar hardware but with Windows Home Server on instead (around £100 OEM) - I figure it'll be less fuss to support random printers.

Hmm, £100... and they could still do with someone to manage their server for them... is it time for the Managed Home Server concept? Home users, with children / own business, who want to have stuff like safe web surfing for children and backup of vital data, encryption, shared file areas, etc. A company to provide hardware and ongoing servicing (off-site backup, virus updates, black-list updates, etc) of a home server?
