    Possible Proxy Problem

I downloaded edubuntu, installed it, I'm running it now and finding it rather interesting. However I have a slight problem in that I can't get it to connect to the internet. The network is fine as I've pinged my windows 2000 server and pinged edubuntu from the server and the ping time is usually 1ms so no problems there.

We use a proxy to connect to the internet - proxy.lancsngfl.ac.uk - but it doesn't seem to pick it up, do I require samba or something to find the proxy ?

You need to set up the proxy manually in the settings. Either it will be for the browser or there is an option in the network settings program (Only used ubuntu briefly). If you need to use it from the console you will need to export it as a variable http_proxy

    Re: Possible Proxy Problem

I have already tried it in the browser, the network settings and the system tools > configuration editor. But no luck.

Setting it in System tools > system editor only sets it for konquerer. If your using Firefox or Mozilla you'll have to set it in their preferences seperatly.

You check if it works at all by setting the http_proxy enviroment variable in a console window and attempting to use wget. If that doesn't work maybe you have other issues like ECN compatability.

    Re: Possible Proxy Problem

Tried that on both my fairly decent laptop and a knackered old machine and I get the same response on both - "temporary name failure in resolution". I've tried everything I can think but I haven't had too much experience of linux to be honest.

You haven't told your system where the DNS servers are.

Brilliant, thanks geoff, the DNS server is my windows server too so I didn't think that would work.
