Re: What distro are you using?

If you scan through the posts you will notice that most people tend to use Ubuntu (or a derivitive - e.f. Kubuntu or Xubuntu).

Personally, I prefer to use Debian. I run this on my workstation and my laptop. Stick Beryl on too and you get all the lovely eye-candy so that you can show off to your die-hard Windows fans :P

We use Fedora here. I've tried pretty well all of the distros but I keep going back to Redhat derivatives; I first installed Redhat 5x back in 1996. My next personnel install wil be Linux From Scratch.

I have noticed people using Ubuntu or its KDE or XFCE counterparts quite a bit but I have had a few issues in the past with Ubuntu and laptops. I haven't really looked at plain old Debian at all.

If you have a few issues with ubuntu and laptops then you're gonna have a nightmare of a time with most other distros...

I started on Mandrake 6 in 1999 and have went through pretty much every distro available and settled on Ubuntu for the last 2 years - it is stable, well maintained, has excellent support in its forums and works with plenty of hardware out of the box.

Its mainly been with the earlier versions of Ubuntu and the majority of the problems were to do with either wireless or firewire connections

    Kubuntu

Installed on an Acer Travelmate 290 - Windows XP needed no less than 6 drivers for it to work, Linux worked OOTB, including wireless LAN.

Re: What distro are you using?

I used to like RPM-based distros. I used RedHat and Mandrake at Uni (we're talking 5 years ago here!). Since then I have got into the Debian package management more and it is a lot easier to use IMHO.

I tried Xubuntu recently (on an OK-spec laptop) - it was indeed nippy in comparison to Ubuntu and Kubuntu (due to less eye candy).

If you want an easy life, just download a few distros and install them in order of preference until one goes on without any hassle
