Take a look at ThinkWiki.org (particularly http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T41 ) for info on setting up your ThinkPad in Linux). It truly is a genius site!

Re: What distro are you using?

Point taken with regards to the *nix/*BSD software but i'm yet to see how it's made easily available via some kind of repositories system like ports/portage or even something like aptitude...maybe you could shed some light on that for me. Parallels....well, the person i know who has a mac is always complaining that parallels doesnt work right.

For what they are...they're expensive. If you were to ask most students who've bought a mac, WHY they bought a mac, they'll tell you it's becauase it looks pretty. I'd rather have an ugly comptuer that looks like a turd than an overpriced fashion accessory.

Also. NO...i dot NOT like the iPod. Creative Zen i've always found to be much easier to use. My friends and acquaintences with Zen dont complain about battery whereas the iPods owners do.

As i'm sure you can tell by my previous posts i'm going off general concensus between various friends and family etc.

Three reasons. Firstly, we're an LTSP site and the nice people at Riverdale built the LTSP right into Fedora. I've lazy, like all good system admins - I do not believe in reinventing the wheel. Secondly familiarity. I know were almost everything lives in Redhat/Fedora so I don't have to hunt. Thirdly, I consider it to be the "best" distro and the easiest to configure. I first installed Redhat 5 back in 1996 and I've tried pretty well all of the other distros over the years and I keep going back to Redhat. Like the slogan says "if you're on a good thing, stick to it".

Finally, schools should be encouraging a corporate view of the world. When the students get out there in the real world, they might well find themselves in a very strict working environment. I've worked for places that did not allow you to customise your PC in anyway other than selecting from a supplied group of wallpapers and running an approved screen saver. It's no use saying "I like IE" when the company standard is Firefox.

    They are.

So you're paying for FreeBSD with a silver theme then
Not really. You are paying for an OS that is rock solid on the hardware due to being developed specifically for that hardware. You are paying for the very easy to use video editing tools, photo management software and all round shininess of the tools included by default... I just think that that is worth it...

Well I get all of those on a rock solid platform, too. Except I don't have to pay a premium for added crap I don't want

    I like greenfieldsupport's view!

My FreeBSD box is "rock solid stable" as is my Ubuntu server box. I've never managed to crash either of them yet. Also i've never crashed a debian box.

Nope, I keep on failing the test by saying things like 'the mighty mouse sucks' and 'safari sucks' and that the iPhone is a waste of money... To pass I need to dedicate my life to saying Apple are the best at everything...
