@Openhgs - What advantage is there to running Redhat if you're not corporate?

@Ric_ why Debian on a laptop? For a mission critical server then sure Debian is good choice if you want a known quantity. Is your resistance against Ubuntu just your way of being contrary

@ITWombat: I just like Debian... itś a personal thing and I guess I may be seen to be a little odd. Etch works very well as a desktop system (using it as I type) and you don´t seem to get as much superfluous cr*p installed by default.

Ubuntu is good but I always go back to Debian.

I've played with SCO Unix, Yggdrasil, RH, Fedora &SuSE over the years, and always got tired/annoyed with it.

Ubuntu is the first *nix distro that is permanently installed on one of my PCs.

Re: What distro are you using?

How about FreeBSD?? My web server has been running on Ubuntu server LTS for a while now since switching from Server 2k3 and i'm now wanting to try something a little more robust. I've been playing with FreeBSD following some books i bought (Which are awesome!) and will be making the switch in a couple of weeks on my webserver.

Desktop OS i prefer Debian. My thinkpad t41 is a bugger to configure with debian so i've just not bothered and stuck Ubuntu on it. Linux doesnt like my external HDDs for some reason and hangs on boot so my desktop is purely XP (Which i need for some software for my degree). The laptop is dual booting XP and ubuntu.

If you want to try the power of BSD on the desktop I recommend PC-BSD.

Lol. You wouldn't catch me using a mac for anything.

A friend of mine is doing a course at Buckingham and Cambridge University College that uses a mac server for apache and mysql and it just doesn't work :P

Re: What distro are you using?

I know a guy at uni and me and a mate tasked him with trying to convince us into getting a mac via demonstrations.

His key arguing point was 4 way scrolling using the mighty mouse. Which he then said "it's not that mighty, i dont like it much."

Other things he was trying to sell us on were the eye candy....well beryl and emerald...problem solved.

For an OS that there's not a lot of software out there for (relative to *nix/*BSD and M$), people sure like to make it seem good...there's too many down sides for my liking.

That and it's rediculously expensive. Same with iPods...i dont like them. They're horrible to use and the battery is crap...need i say more.

The mighty mouse sucks. That is all I can say about it really.

That's just nonsense - Anything that runs on *bsd will run on OS X. And most things that run on linux will too. Slap in the new version of parallels and you can run windows apps too (not in a vm window, as 'native' windows).

    That and it's rediculously expensive.
That's the thing - they aren't ridiculously expensive. They're about 10% more expensive in the end, which if you take into account styling and the superb OS is not bad.

Yeah, you do really. The menu system on the ipod is more intuitive than any other player I've come across, and battery life is superb in my nano.

Now, whilst I like mac's - I use whatever is best for the job. In my case that is a mac...

So? It just means that the sysadmin who set it up and runs it isn't any good...
