For Windows there is CIFS/SMB for Mac there is/was AFP. I know that there is NFS which was developed by Sun I just wondered if there was a native linux one or whether they just integrated everyone elses.

Think of it as linux being a kernel, and software runs on the kernel.

Computers that run linux (kernel) also have the capability of running SMB/CIFS,NFS,SFTP,FTP etc
So a file manager such as nautilus will natively use all of those protocols.

I suppose if you are looking for a protocol that was developed for linux (based operating systems) then maybe? rsync would be the closest. but in reality
MS just utilise a version of SMB/CIFS so you could say that was native to linuxes as well...
