7za - backup zips without extracting them first

I backup moodle using 7za. Recently a teacher has made a backup of a course resulting a in massive zip file in the moodle data files.

When 7za tries to backup this file it first tries to extract it, then adds the extracted files to the 7z. Is there any way of stopping this behaviour, and simply backing up the zip itself.

p7zip is its proper name I believe
