Our email server is being hit by about 300 fishing attacks a day trying random 4 or 5 character prefixes
Any ideas on what can be done about it? Our filtering is done by the LA and they say they can't see a pattern!

Theres nothing worse than being attacked by someone throwing spam at you! It can be quite painful too if it is the canned variety!

Take a look at Proxmox ( www.proxmox.com ) - sits between your mail server and the rest of the world.
It's basically a mail proxy that runs Spamassin and some AV stuff.
yep, we have a custom built spam assassin box to filter out things before it hits exchange.

1. Don't have catch-all email addresses - bounce improperly addressed garbage
2. Use a decent Spam filter - SA is OK if you're as clued-in as Geoff, we sell a packaged up version of the commercial Mailshell filter, which is a fair bit better than SA, and miles easier![]()
3. Greylisting?
Thanks guys I'll pass those tips on.
(more business fro smoothwall perhaps!)
