The GP2X, has anyone got one?
Hi All,
I have ordered one of these (as a xmas pressie to myself)
http://gp2x.co.uk/indexgp2x.html
It's a Linux powered open source multimedia device that apparently plays movies, games, etc (mainly emulators) and boasts to be around 4x more powerful than the Nintendo DS.
Does anyone here already own one and have any views?
I also thought that the Linux geeks on here would be interested if they didnt already know about it

I already have one.
I mainly use it for playing SNES/Megadrive games.

This doesn't sound like a bad idea! It would be nice to know whats hot and whats not in relation to software for the device.
What the 'must have' apps and games are and the ones best to avoid?

Pros:
- Nice screen
- Build Quality
- Lots of communtiy support
- Runs lots of emulators/apps.
Cons:
- Battery life
- flakey USB (get round this with a CF reader in PC)
- 20s boot time

How "con" is the battery life?

Docs say 6 hours for gaming. It's more like 2 - 4 depending on what batteries your using and how heavily you're taxing the system.
Listening to music with the screen off is ok though. ~10hrs.

Re: The GP2X, has anyone got one?
I suspected as much from the battery life after playing games on a Nokia N-Gage!
After all, it is a mini-PC running off 2AA batteries. I can see that rechargables will be needed here as well!
It's worth mentioning that if you are getting the newer model GP2X it has a faster boot time (around 11secs I believe) and I believe the USB issue has been fixed as well. Ive also opted for the faster processor model as well so that should make a difference in draining the batteries even quicker!
Haha

Yep! Will be putting those on my shopping list as well. Already ordered my GP2X V2! If anyone else wants one I suggest getting in quick because they informed me they are very busy and stocks are going fast!

I also have one. Mostly for MAME, also other emulators, movies and MP3.
Totally agree about the battery lifetime, it could also do with wireless IMO as I have no breakout board.
File archive is here:
