Default Kernel Panic

We are running a Fog server here which is now showing a kernel panic on bootup. I have tried to find some help on google, but don't really understand linux too well. I am running ubuntu 8.04 server with kernel version 2.6.24-23-server.

The error i have is "Kernel panic: Not Syncing. Fatal exception in interrupt in interrupt"

Can anyone help get rid of this error please?

Do you have other kernels available?

(Just before it boots you have a short moment to press a key to get to the grub menu where it'll hopefully list some kernels for you to choose from)

One of the suggestions that comes up a lot is double check the hardware on the hosting machine to make sure its not something obvious first, RAM and HDD check are the first step

@kmount - the only other kernels available are 2.6.24-23-server (Recovery) and memtest 86+

The memtest works, but recovery does not.

@Jamo - I think you've just hit the nail on the head, I moved the server to my room to work on it and booted it up with no network cable plugged in, and it got to the logon screen, as soon as I plugged in the network cable it came up with the kernel panic.

any ideas on what to try? I'm thinking replacing the nic, but i don't know.

Could be hardware failure I suppose, or a driver issue which is affecting the nic.

Worth trying another nic and running upgrades as my 8.04 box is on 2.6.24-25-server

I've just thought, when I boot into a live cd the nic works fine. I'll look at upgrading the kernel as suggested.
