28th September 2009, 10:51 AM #1 Using Linux: Initial Thoughts
Continuing from my thread last week about my little Linux experiment (I will be using ONLY Ubuntu for at least a week, to give myself a bit of a learning curve), I am pleased to report that three hours in and I haven't been tempted to switch back once, although it is still obviously in the early stages!
This morning I have been using Firefox for all of my web work (nothing special here, have used it on both Windows and OSX for ages and it's basically the same!).
I have also started to play with OpenOffice's presentation, and for putting together fairly ordinary presentations, it seems like a perfectly serviceable tool.
However, getting down to perhaps a little bit of cheating now. I NEED to demonstrate a couple of features of Windows 7 in a presentation I am putting together - so rather than use a real machine, I have installed Sun Virtual Box within Ubuntu and installed W7 into this. I won't be using this machine, other than for getting screen shots - I hope that's allowed

28th September 2009, 10:56 AM #2 VMs are allowed, back when i was in 6th form i had a laptop that i used in all my lessons (hand writing sucks hard) which ran Fedora (and later on SUSE), this was fine for most lessons but for Computing i needed to use M$ Access so i had an XP VM that i used for that lesson.
i still told people i only use linux on it :P

Sure its allowed, just remember to run a thousand pass random data algorithm over the area it resided on when you are done with it, to prevent the spread of the infection you see.
