    [Solaris] Disk Partitioning on Live System

    Evening folks,

    Would anyone have an idea about partition Solaris disks? Currently Demoing Sun's VDI Solution and trying their "Demo on a single box method"

    However it asks to create a ZFS file store for the .vdi images. When I installed the system, i went through the process of setting sizes for / and swap, I didn't create any other folders as various applications files are stored in various places and thought having everything on the same segment would be best.

    What I'd ideally like todo is partition the drive in two and use the second drive as the ZFS store for the images of the desktops.

    Anyone know how this would be achieved, Solaris is yet another beast to get a grasp of, everything looks different, feels different, and acts different. The drive in the machine is a 450GB Sata drive.

    2. Configure the ZFS storage.

    Sun VDI 3 (in combination with VirtualBoxuses the ZFS filesystem to create snapshots of virtual machine disk images or to clone/replicate virtual machine disksThe interaction with ZFS is handled automatically and is completely encapsulated within VDIHoweverinitially you must setup the ZFS storage (more precisely a ZFS storage pool aka zpool).

    previously mentionedthe second disk should be configured as ZFS storageSimply trigger the following command as root user:

    # zpool create VDI <name of second disk>

    (In this case, the name of the zpool is 'VDI'but you can also use any other name in your setup. If you do not know the name of your second diskyou can look it up using the format or fdisk command.)

    ZFS uses any memory available (up to the limit) for a so-called ARC cacheThis can cause issues in a demo setupbecause VDI may falsely report that there is not enough memory for starting up any virtual machineTo resolve this issueadapt the max value used for the ARC cache.
          For 
    exampleto restrict the memory to 2GBadd the following line in /etc/system:

    set zfs:zfs_arc_max 2147483648

        
    Enable the SMF service for iSCSI access (iSCSI target daemonwith the command:

    svcadm enable svc:/system/iscsitgt:default

    Cool

    You have two options

    "Just to get terminology right in Solaris X86 a slice is not the same as a FDISK Partition.
    A DOS primary/extended partition can be sliced up."


    I would reinstall and leave a slice free with space needed.
    Then as your document
    Code:
    zpool create VDI c0t1d0s<#free slice num>
    But a quick and dirty solution without installing
    Code:
    mkfile 50g /vdi-pool.0
    zpool create vdi /vdi-pool.0
    zpool status
    If you run out of space, then simply add some more to the pool

    Code:
    mkfile 50g /vdi-pool.1
    zpool add vdi /vdi-pool.1
    zpool status
