What is it, exactly, that you're trying to do with/on the server?

Is this a server that you've set up yourself? Is it doing anything much important, or is it just sitting in a corner doing nothing much? You could (from tomorrow) simply install the latest version of Ubuntu on it, which you might find is better for ease-of-use.

What distribution of Linux is on the server (different distributions will have different ways to install a GUI)?

Isn't IPCop Linux-From-Scratch? I always thought it was...

With you on the Debian point.

It could be, I haven't really looked that closely (it was there before I was).

Ive got a SunSPARC Netra T1 with Ubuntu on it running Squid. Currently handling the entire schools web requests.
Wasnt too sure the hardware would be up to the task tbh, but its impressed me with how solid its been since implementation!

    Debian

Running a couple of Gentoo installs, but they do tend to break if I update after a while, so I'm gradually moving over to Debian - which is very stable over upgrades (3 servers running that).

I noticed that when we had an RM Smartcache 2, it was using Red Hat - got Smoothwall now

Also got a couple of Ubuntu machines for guest use - which work ok.

Please correct me if I am wrong but I was always told that IPCop was the split off of Smoothwall?

A few appliances here, two One Lan boxes, a SmartCache (not a good advert for Linux), and a Mutiny Monitoring box.

I've also got a Smoothwall + Advanced Proxy + Sarg VM will be using with an open SSID so sixthformers can use there own laptop. Hopefully gonna bung it on ESX when we get it.

Oh and one Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS VM that runs openfire server.
