    Is the server down at the moment? I've been having this trouble for over a week now.
    gb.archive.ubuntu.com works fine from here as of now. I'm assuming you've set your proxy server? Mine's set in my ~/,bashrc:

    Code:
    # Work Proxy
    HTTP_PROXY="http://proxyIP:80"
    http_proxy="http://proxyIP:80"
    ftp_proxy="http://proxyIP:80"
    FTP_PROXY="http://proxyIP:80"
    no_proxy="http://localservers"
    export HTTP_PROXY http_proxy ftp_proxy FTP_PROXY no_proxy
    my /etc/apt/sources.list uses ftp by default, looks like this and works. You don't want PLF or multiverse for a server though.

    Code:
    deb ftp://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted
    deb-src ftp://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted

    ## Major bug fix updates produced after the final release of the
    ## distribution.
    deb ftp://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted
    deb-src ftp://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted

    ## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'universe'
    ## repository.
    deb ftp://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe
    deb-src ftp://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe

    ## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'backports'
    ## repository.
    deb ftp://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse
    deb-src ftp://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse

    deb ftp://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted
    deb-src ftp://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted
    deb ftp://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security universe
    deb-src ftp://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security universe

    ## PLF
    # deb http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/ dapper free non-free
    # deb-src http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/ dapper free non-free

    You can also set the proxy for apt in /etc/apt/apt.conf

    Code:
    Aquire::http::Proxy "http://proxy.lancsngfl.ac.uk:8080/";

    Re: Installing an ftp server on a Ubuntu LAMP server

    It seems like it's a problem with our LEA's ISP. No surprise there - we've had this sort of problem before with a few web sites and email servers unreachable. Techs in other schools have stories of strange DNS entries at the ISP.

    I've checked my proxy configuration in /etc/apt/apt.conf and it's correct. Besides, I can access security.ubuntu.com no problem, so that proves the entry for the proxy server is correct.

    From a browser on my XP desktop at work, I can access security... but not archive... .

    I'm writing this from home, where I've just set up Ubuntu LAMP server on a virtual machine, and it accesses the default repositories right out of the box with no reconfiguration.

    Fortunately, we're getting a new ISP next term, after years of poor service from the current one.

    @ Pete & Geoff: Sorry for taking your time, and thanks for the information. You've helped me narrow the cause of the fault.

    Re: Installing an ftp server on a Ubuntu LAMP server

    Might be ECN support?

    Code:
    echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_ecn
    Alternatively it might be Window Scaling?

    Code:
    echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling
    If doing either fixes the problem, then your ISP has a busted router that needs fixing.
