    Dans Guardian and Squid help

OK so we've been given the go ahead to get a server and get some sort of filtering for the PDAs which will be on an entirely seperate network.
i've installed latest LTS Ubuntu server, as suggested by Geoff, got all the packages installed. I was following a simple howto guide on setting it all up, but I've done that and everytime I set my machines proxy as the ubuntu box it does nothing.
Does anyone have an in depth article/guide on setting up DG and squid to work properly?

Any help is appreciated as in a month or two we will probably have to get this all set up ready to use with the PDAs
    Cheers

    Mike

I would suggest first getting squid working as a proxy without dansguardian, after that has been tested you should be able to integrate and test dansguardian with squid.

yep im just doing that now, as we dont have the other internet line in im having to test with our internet. so ive added a line to say all internal ips have access, and ive also added a line saying forward on to parent cache which is our LEA one (embc). yet it keeps telling me the parent cache is unavailable yet on my machine the internet is fine.

check you can talk to the upstream proxy from the ubuntu box.
    on the cli do:
    Code:
    telnet upstream.proxy.address portnumber
if it connects it will at least tell you that the ubuntu install can resolve/reach the upstream server.

think ive got it working now, at a very basic level.
i used an example squid.conf which gave me access ok, whereas the default supplied with the installation didn't. obviously its settings i dont know probably blocking something but at least i know it works, so now its just a case of tinkering....
    cheers for the help

will do mate. once we have the seperate adsl line in and the real server i can test it out properly, but at the mo i just wanted to get it working as sorts, to show it is a feasible option

just having other issues now in that we cant see network shares at all. type in \\server\share and it says it cant see it from the PDA, yet it used to work (its not squid/dg, as its been tested without).
    i hate these pdas!!!!!
