Enabling Serial Console support in Linux

As I've just lost contact with a machine over the network and am looking forward to lugging a monitor over to it to fix it I thought I might mention this HOWTO:

I'll certainly write up what I had to do to enable a serial console on the Linux boxes here. However I don't see much point in duplicating the entire howto. Regardless I couldn't as the copyright status is unclear.
