LAMP - Ubuntu 7.10 Standard Edition
Does anyone know if you are able to do a LAMP server on the standard edition of the new Ubuntu, and if you would someone be able to point me in the right direction.
Everywhere ive googled on the net references the server edition. Do you still get the GUI with the server edition, im all very new to this, so still trying to get use the CLI.
Thanks

You can get the GUI at any time by just installing the package. It wont come on the CD image though but will download from the internet which will be handled by the package manager. You dont need to know a massive amount of commands to work from the CLI.

Server cd, boot it, then it asks toward the end for v 7.10 I think if you want a lamp server whereas 6.05 lts asks at the beginning.
If you want a web server get used to the cli it's easy enough.
Install ssh server on it so you can administer the cli from anywhere using putty.

If you install just the server edition, you do not get a GUI by default. But you can get one by doing: Code:
$ sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop
for example, which will give you the Xubuntu GUI (light-weight).
Check out www.ubuntuguide.org for HOWTOs etc.

If you want a pointy clicky interface for your Ubuntu server(s). I suggest Webmin.

Download the .deb from http://www.webmin.net ( a uk mirror is at http://kent.dl.sourceforge.net/sourc..._1.370_all.deb , which you can download using wget on the box itself if you want).
And follow the instructions here to install it.
