Remote control Ubuntu from Ubuntu and Android
Basically, i have setup Plex as a media server on Ubuntu 13.04 but want to run it headless so i don't have to keep getting the mouse and keyboard out by my TV when i want to do anything on the machine. Whats the best way of connecting to it from another Ubuntu desktop and also my Nexus 7 on the LAN with a GUI (rdp or vnc?), with also the possibility of external access in the future.

Have you tried the "Plex Remote" Android app?
I used a similar thing for an XBMC server I had and it worked OK.

I do use plex remote for the controller, i meant whats the best protocol for controlling the server itself so i don't have to anything plugged into it (just power and network) ie: remote desktop or vnc.
