The share permissions should be full control to everybody then do specific file permissions on it so its your Guest account / guest group read only, list contents and execute and specify your user account as full control over it.

so I have to chmod the directory so only rob can write?
EDIT:
I just made a group called smbwrite, added rob to it then:
Code:
sudo chgrp smbwrite testdir
sudo chmod u=rw,g=rw,o=r testdir
but now no-one can access the directory over the shares, I just get 'network access denied' errors :/
EDIT.EDIT:
just noticed I forgot the x's on those permissions!
think thats got it now
cheers

Wow I only just realised I answered a *nix question with a Windows answer as I find nix pointless

You find *nix pointless....a VAST majority of the internet is run by *nix...BSD and UNIX...
So in essence you find this site pointless? Without *nix/BSD/UNIX you wouldn't be able to get here.
Shame on you john

No wonder were so sluggish at times and then spent time down
Sry that wasnt fair, but I find that my Windows Hosting Boxes never go wrong, never go down and are darned good and reliable, so just never found the need for anything other than Windows.

No matter what I do I seem to end up with no access for anyone, read-only access for everyone or write for everyone!
Is it even possible?!
Thanks
Rob
You not tried using Webmin to manage it?
With us being a school which will most likely never have anyone experianced in *nix again i always like tyo have a web interface even if i prefer to use CLI.
Also nice to be able to check between the 2 so you can see how the syntax works.
