    Fedora 18 "Spherical Cow" Released

Do any EduGeek's use this distro?

Download / Release Notes / How to install the MATE or Cinnamon desktops

The new version, which was previously name as Spherical Cow, supports UEFI Secure Boot, comes with a rewritten installation UI, and the System Storage Manager(SSM) as a command-line interface to provide a unified view of storage management tools, as well as a choice of five different desktop interfaces, including Gnome 3.6, Cinnamon, Mate Desktop, KDE Plasma Workspaces 4.9, and Xfce 4.10.

Developers get updated language versions including Rails 3.2, Python 3.3, and Perl 5.16, as well as Clojure, which adds tooling packages libraries and frameworks. SysAdmins can now deploy offline system updates, use StorageManagement tools and libraries to manage storage area networks and network attached storage, and take advantage of the integration of Samba 4.

Not surprisingly, Fedora 18 is also equipped with a few more cloud features, including the integration of Eucalyptus 3.2, platform for private Infrastructure-as-a-Service clouds, support for OpenStack, as well as the integration of oVirt Engine, a management app for the oVirt virtualization platform, and an ability to suspend and resume guests within virtual machines.

Stuck this on my old laptop here and it runs nice enough, I prefer the look feel of the Gnome desktop over Ubuntu/Unity (12.10 being buggy, the terrible nvidia driver setup and its amazon thing put me off ubuntu a fair bit)

I've heard some *really* bad things about Fedora18.
All of our Linux desktops are deployed, updated and configured through a central (spacewalk) server, Apparently the new installer breaks all of this rendering it is near impossible to deploy. Think I'll hold out until its a bit more ready.

It doesn't look good at all.

A top Linux kernel developer has dubbed Fedora 18 "the worst Red Hat distro" he has ever seen.

lan Cox, presently employed by Intel, has switched to Ubuntu as a result of his disastrous experience with Fedora 18.

Writing in his blog, Cox said that the Fedora 18 installer is unusable, the updater is buggy. The default desktop has been eviscerated to the point of being slightly less useful than a chocolate teapot, and instead of fixing the bugs in it they've added them. (Source)

The reviews are bad. It's very buggy and was not ready for release, by most accounts.

My OS of choice is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. 12.10 was unreliable for me - I had too many lockups and wierd delays. 12.04 is totally stable for me.

Yup, both my friends who use Fedora have reverted to older versions as they find it unusable. They also both dislike debian based distros.

Personally, I've moved to Linux Mint 14 now. Does the trick just nicely!
