    permissions on /var/www

im sure this is simple but i cant find any instructions that explain it, simply enough, or at all. If this was windows it'd be a 2 second job....

Ive set up samba & shared /var/www for my windows user. connected in windows, mapped the drive. thats all working. the share is set to writeable and browseable.

cept i cant write. Im fairly certain it's because my corresponding user on the debian etch doesnt have permission to write in /var/www

i've tried adding myself to the root or www-data secondary group in webmin but thats not working. I dont really know what Im doing here.

    thx for any help

    Re: permissions on /var/www

Why not chown the files to your deb user? Once you've chowned set the permissions to be world readable.

To me it sounds like more of a problem with samba configs...i always mess those up.

Maybe installing an ftpd would be easier? That way you could setup the httpd to point to the home dir of the user that you're logging into the ftpd as. So you point your httpd config to ~/public_html or something like that

    Re: permissions on /var/www

Hmm...well my webserver runs on freebsd but the principal's most definately the same.

I don't use samba shares to upload files. I ftp them into place.

The permissions on my site are:

    Code:
    4 -rwxr-xr-x 1 joedetic www 2218 Aug 9 16:29 index.php
So...your user has access and so does the www group for publishing. Have you tried that? Or www-data or whatever it is on deb...i've forgotten.

    Re: permissions on /var/www

That depends on what user you're accessing the share as.

remember you can force the user/permissions on the share from samba.

No, you force user/group like so:

    Code:
    force group = www-data
    force user = www-data
