I read that it is being adopted by Apple first. I wonder in actual fact though how much the dat-to-day user will notice the difference in speed, that ISNT data transfer (from device to device, in the future).

Once Intel (and AMD) integrate TB support into thier chipsets I reckon ThunderBolt will become a lot more widespread. Like DisplayPort, manufacturers won't have to pay any royalties or license fees to Intel which should help speed up its adoption.
Apple learned its lesson after FireWire licensing slowed adoption - the Thunderbolt port and controller specification are entirely Intelís. Similarly, thereís no per-port licensing fee or royalty for peripheral manufacturers to use the port or the Thunderbolt controller. (Source)
