For every time we moan about CRB checks...

... there's probably someone getting caught trying to slip through the net. You may have already seen this on BBC this morning:

More than 4,000 offenders, including rapists, paedophiles and drug dealers, applied to become teachers last year only to be rejected after checks.

The information was released to the Press Association after a request to the Criminal Records Bureau.

CRB checks have prevented more than 130,000 unsuitable people from working with children or vulnerable groups.
Source: BBC News - CRB checks mean 4,000 offenders rejected as teachers

Worth remembering that as bureaucratic and frustrating a process as it is, CRB does an important job and does catch people who could otherwise be in positions to do considerable harm.

I don't think the majority of people have a problem with the idea of CRB checks, it's the way/frequency with which they are done which is the problem. I went through one for a job, one for volunteering at a primary and an enhanced one as I went through the adoption process in two months. Other staff will go for years without one if they don't change jobs.

Because some people have to pay/apply for their own and many places insist you have to get a new one before they employ you. My wife had to get 2 in the past 6 months when she got a temporary contract and one for her new job.

What annoys me is having to get a new one when you change jobs, especially if your new job falls under a different borough. You're either clear or you're not, surely location doesn't matter?

That being said, I'd rather them be too pedantic than not pedantic enough.

We have many discussions regarding the system within my role as a Cub Scout Leader, which has a seperate CRB check done for. All it means is that your haven't been caught yet.

Yeah, well... When you have things like this and this...

Someone isn't doing their job properly. Which, pedantic or not, makes CRB checks potentially unreliable.

You also get people being banned for being on the sex offenders register, even if they were put on it for something stupid. [Like getting drunk and streaking... IIRC, that can land you on it.]

While I agree... This is a dangerous mindset to get into.

I've seen people get railroaded over nothing*, because certain people in charge thought like this too much.

Granted, being in a school means if allegations are made, they need to be dealt with swiftly. But, you need to make sure they're true and not just accept them.

*Usually a misunderstanding, or malicious rumours.

At least it seems to be weeding out the ones who have been caught and thus reduces risk.

True, but you can say that about any crime. Plus the figures show that these people are still trying to get in to schools despite their record, so it is keeping them out at least.

Those who were rejected had almost 9,500 previous offences between them, including 50 sex offences, 11 for arson and two for making threats to kill.
    Is stated in the article.

There's a flip side to this too. I wonder how many people are missed?

CRB checks are one part of several tools to try and catch those who should not be working with children and vulnerable adults. This is also where safer recruitment practices come in as well.

It is a bit like eSafety ... just because you have done one check it doesn't mean you don't continue checking even whilst people are employed, even if it is just keeping your mind aware of possible signs that something is not the way it should be.
