I've no idea what exactly happened here - it could be that the teacher concerned wasn't doing their job properly but this is the kind of thing which is very, very difficult to prevent.

I doubt there's a single school in the country where anyone knows what's happening at every minute in every classroom (and I don't actually think we would want that to happen!)

The head's comments that she's going to keep the IT room closed until she can be sure it's safe are just the sort of thing designed to keep the papers happy - there's no way you can do that short of just having a basic whitelist of sites which the children are allowed to use - and even then, some parents wouldn't be happy with what they're allowed to see!
I can see what you're getting at and to be honest my comment was to stir up debate.

I also accept that with the best will in the world, these pictures get through our filtering.

At my school, the children are unable to print directly from the internet (http is a banned as part of the document title) which would at least make printing the stuff more difficult.

Sorry, why did he type the word 'porn' into a search engine again? It's not like he was searching for something innocent and came across it and was horrified. Clearly a problem with the child even if their filters/supervision weren't perfect. Does he have internet access at home? I'd be willing to bet that isn't filtered/supervised either...

I would think so, plus a large box of tissues.

    Accordingly he
produced copies of explicit sexual and violent images downloaded from a classroom computer
    and then
printed out the pictures and popped them in his school bag to take home
    Obviously for further study later....

The building went up a treat, but my poor little lamb could have hurt himself and it's all the school's fault. They should have stopped him.

We had a near miss last year with a year 6 class. They were doing a year end play set in the Wild West, and the teacher decided to do some costume research. Got them to do a Google image search on the word cowboys or cowboy - can't remember which - and one image came up that we certainly hadn't expected. Fortunately it was thumbnail when we spotted it first over someone's shoulder, and I was able to divert attention at the desktop that it appeared on, whilst the teacher promptly got the class to change their search terms.

You can't guarantee that any search result will be pure, however innocently entered, particularly with image searches which somehow seem to bypass the safesearch settings. And the pupil under discussion here certainly doesn't appear to have been innocently searching. There surely has to be some element of personal responsibility. I am assuming that the teacher of the class didn't give their pupils that search term! Does the school in question have an AUP for pupils??

Mum Kerry said: "I'm appalled, angry and scared. You place your trust with the school to look after your children and don't expect to have to be worrying about them when they're there. She is now considering removing her son from the school over the incident.
Yes the school should have had reliable filtering in place but then the kid shouldn't have been searching for Porn in the first place. The mother needs to realise that it's not entirely the schools fault and after reading the above I don't think she does.

To make life easier a number of schools turn down the filtering. The downside of this is that they get anything and everything.

A few figures from yesterday's EMBC event ... more money has been spent on protection, filtering and security than on the MS licences (considering we are talking about a MOSS portal solution for 8 LAs).

And yet it is wasted when someone in a school decides that they want to turn it right down because they don't see why they should filter things ... or worse still, don't understand why filters are needed in the first place.
