    Microsoft renames SkyDrive to OneDrive

    Source: The Verge

Microsoft is renaming its SkyDrive cloud storage to OneDrive. The software giant has registered onedrive.com and the company has a promotional video on YouTube announcing the new name. Microsoft says the name change will take place soon, and that the service "will continue to operate as you expect and all of your content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business respectively as the new name is rolled out across the portfolio."

The name change comes just over six months after Microsoft was forced to rename SkyDrive following a trademark case with British Sky Broadcasting Group (BSkyB). Microsoft is positioning the new OneDrive naming as the one place for documents, photos, and other content. "Changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasnít easy," admits Microsoft's Ryan Gavin. "We are excited about what is to come, and canít wait to share more."

Microsoft have an aversion to using their company brand with their product range for some reason. Its one of the reasons I reckon they keep having so many issues getting into markets - people don't see a unified company. Everything is all disjointed. Why isn't it Bing Drive? Why is their email service Outlook and not Bing Mail? Its all random.

Agreed. Everything Google does has 'Google' in front of it so its instantly identifiable. Apple has the 'Mac' and 'i' prefix. They draw you into an ecosystem.
MS has a random collection of service names that don't form a cohesive brand.

This is very true, unless their new extension is everything 'one' XBOX One, One Drive... doesn't quite work.

Would be much more simple to have:

Microsoft Search, Microsoft Outlook Web and Microsoft Drive...

I'm waiting for them to copyright "One". OneNote, Xbox One, One Note. May we'll see Windows One, Surface One, etc.

I just want to see how they convince the courts that they invented "One".

Rupert Murdoch invented the word "One" in 1982.

They don't do that because of the disgruntled and whiney tech media, appleites and *nix nuts who will go after anything with MS in the title attempting to poison the brand before it even gets to market. Just look at what happened to Vista, yes it had its issues but they were nothing compared to the press panning it got given largely without cause.

As to them having to change the name at all, its rubbish, who is going to mistake a dirty tv channel with a storage provider anyway, it is as bad as the rounded corners debacle and Apple got away with sharing with Apple Records, despite their foray into music. There are definitely two rules in the UK and MS seems to get the much harsher set.

Given the market cap of media companies in comparison to tech ones I still think that the tech companies should just buy out the dirty little ransom ware media outlets and set them straight, its not like they could be any more filled with propaganda anyway.
