'Like' being the operative word. There isn't anything in Google's statement that says they definitely will support local content. It's completely non-committal.

What doesn't make sense is why would Google add the code shown below after they had already sold hundreds of thousands of Chromecasts. Why not disable the ability to play local content from the start given the current state of the SDK (and to prevent certain developers from reverse engineering the Google Cast protocol)?

who knows. Maybe it wasn't working properly? Perhaps there was an exploit in it?
I don't see what they would have against local streaming or why they say they would like to support it if they have no intention of doing so.
I think we'll have to wait for the final release to know for sure.

The Android and iOS Chromecast apps are now available to download outside of the US. I wonder if this means Google will be releasing the Chromecast internationally soon?

I recently bought one on Amazon for £38. Took a gamble on cost really as it'll probably be cheaper when it finally gets released here.

Having played with it for a few weeks now, it is at this moment a very limited device, BUT we already knew that. What it does do, Google Play, YouTube and Netflix, it does very well. Extremely easy to use, and far easier than using the clunky controls of my smart TVs (Sony & Samsung).

I read this on Engadget the other day. Hopefully we'll start seeing some more apps being made available, such as AirCast, soon.

Potential is still high, just a shame we're having to wait so long to see it!

    About time!

Chromecast now open to developers with the Google Cast SDK « Google Developers Blog

Back in July we announced the developer preview of the Google Cast Software Development Kit (SDK), the underlying Chromecast technology that enables multi-screen experiences across mobile devices (phones, tablet, laptops) and large-screen displays. Starting today, the Google Cast SDK is available for developing and publishing Google Cast-ready apps.

The Google Cast SDK is simple to integrate because there’s no need to write a new app. Just incorporate the SDK into your existing mobile and web apps to bring your content to the TV. You are in control of how and when you develop and publish your cast-ready apps through the Google Cast developer console. The SDK is available on Android and iOS as well as on Chrome through the Google Cast browser extension.

Glad to hear there is a plex app for chromecast. Use plex a lot and really like the interface. Hmm, may order one to have a play.

Anyone else notice all of the Chromecasts (US imports) from all sellers have been pulled from Amazon.co.uk?

Was just looking to buy another one and they're all gone. Even trying to link from my past orders brings up an error.

    Interesting...

I remember reading something a week or two ago that said Google asked Amazon to remove all Chromecasts from their UK website.

It must mean an international release is close?

UK Stores Begin Receiving Chromecast Stock « OMG Chrome! / Twitter

“Looks like Google Chromecast will be available to buy in UK stores very soon! Not on the system yet so price isn’t showing up. Just received a full box with Chromecast.”
Plex Chromecast Support Is Now Free For Everyone, App Still Costs $5 (£2.98) For Non-Subscribers « Android Police

Chromecast support came a little early to the Plex app, but it also came with a catch – only premium PlexPass subscribers could use it. That was only a temporary situation, as the developers added features and improved the feature. Now the preview period is over and everyone can enjoy Plex's excellent content streaming with Chromecast support without a subscription.
