    Free backup software

Anyone know of any free backup software. I'm sick of NT Backup and it's wierdness and want something a bit nicer.

I'm backing up to disk, a samba share across the network on a fibre link. I don't have any access to the linux system [proprietary built Buffalo device], so it needs to run on win2k.

    Re: Free backup software

I use a combination of NT backup and robocopy all driven by a VBS file. I find if you keep things simple with NT Back it tends to be ok. I tend to use NT backup on the sytem partition and use robocopy for the rest as this cuts down on back up time after the initial backup. I have it mirror my user areas and application sources etc.
The script does a full back up friday and an incremental mon-thu. There are 3 weeks worth of backups for the NT backup stuff. In week 1-3 folders.
On friday the week 3 stuff is deleted and week 1 and 2 are moved up.
After the NT backup has run I have a few robocopys run. After all this is done the whole disk is mirrored to an external SATA disk with gets taken home on monday and the one at home comes in on tuesday.
There is always an upto date copy of user files on the disk and if I need previous versions i just use the shadow copy facilities.

    Re: Free backup software

thanks Geoff - some open source program I was using is supposed to utilise rsync - wasn't sure how tho' and it wasn't going too well - so thanks for that - i'll definately give that a go.

Thanks too Chris. Is robocopy 2003 Server only? - I see it comes with the free 2003 resource kit.

    Re: Free backup software

No its works on XP too and 2K I guess not tried it. I use it at home to do backups. Make sure you download the newest version as it has some more functions and simpler syntax.

    Z:\>robocopy /?
