11th August 2010, 01:03 PM #1 Netgear Switches
I have just installed:
1 x Netgear GSM7248-200-EUS and
2 x Netgear GS724TP
I have connected each 24 port switch to the 48 port via patch leads.
48 port switch is fine, I've given it a static IP, and it's talking to/taking packets from all the devices I have plugged in. However, the 24 port switches are a different matter. I've also given them static IPs but unless I plug my computer into that switch I cannot communicate with it i.e. no web interface. The same goes for the other 24 port.
When I run an IP scan the switches are not listed. If I'm plugged into a switch there are only two IPs. My computer and the switch.
What have I missed or doing wrong?

11th August 2010, 04:09 PM #2 are you trying to connect to it from a hp server by any chance?
-

11th August 2010, 04:42 PM #3 Not HP but from my custom workstation. I've also tried one of the latops (IBM) with the same result, only the latop and the switch are shown and no network.

11th August 2010, 05:05 PM #4 id be tempted to try upgrading the netgears firmware as the ones weve used recently have needed it to talk to hp servers may be a similar issue (im not sure on model numbers as its not an issue ive personally had)

11th August 2010, 06:41 PM #5 These are brand spanking new switches, should they need a firmware upgrade so soon?

Well I should have known, since everything else needs an upgrade as soon as it's installed
More homework required methinks.

11th August 2010, 07:26 PM #8 You can download something from the Netgear site called 'Smartwizard Discovery' which will scan for switches and check that the IP addresses are valid. If you have power cuts you'll need this to identify which switches have reset and come back without a valid IP address.

11th August 2010, 08:59 PM #9 Thanks I have that already on my workstation - it doesn't find either switch unless my machine is plugged in to the switch. Then it finds the switch that I am plugged in to.

12th August 2010, 10:59 AM #10 try enabling SNMP on the switches as a bit of daft, that may just work.

Why might that work? Maybe because they'd be talking to the other switch on a different channel perhaps? I'll give it a try tomorrow anyway, thanks.

12th August 2010, 08:04 PM #12 Have you checked to see if there are any settings that would specify which ports are used as trunking? I have seen switches that did similarly irritating things for this reason before.

12th August 2010, 10:45 PM #13 Trunking meaning that some ports may or can be set for switch to switch?
-

15th August 2010, 05:13 PM #14 trunking meaning joining more than one port together to boost performance.
If they are dual personality ports IE some shared with the fibre SFP ones avoid using them as despite the fibre SFPs being empty I have known the copper ports be a bit weird at times!

15th August 2010, 07:41 PM #15 Ah tight, thanks. There are some fibre ports but I'm not using them.
