3 com switch won't let me backup the config

Did you try to telnet into the 5500 switch ? then tun this command

backup unit unit-id current-configuration to {dest-addr | dest-hostname } filename.cfg or for stacks backup fabric current-configuration to {dest-addr | dest-hostname } filename.cfg
