I am the ict coordinator/technician and teacher of a lsargwe primary school. I am looking for free software auditing software that I can run across the network. Does anyone know of any?
It's always a good idea to search the forums first, if you haven't already done so.
You could try Netpoint from Neutex:
http://www.neutex.net/
It's free and gives you quite a few different views on the information. (It also does a pretty thorough hardware inventory and does need any agents installing on the workstations)
Spice works is free - www.spiceworks.com
that or System Management Server ( but thats not free )

http://ocsinventory.sourceforge.net/
Glad I looked this up as they have a new version.
We hope to publish OCS Inventory NG 1.0 final release at the begining of january 2007.
Have a look at lansweeper it is free and there is nothing to install on remote PC's
Thanks for the Lansweeper link. I have installed it on my own network and am very impressed with it. It has the right balance between simplicity and information gathered. I've tried the Neutex product but didn't like it much because of the complete lack of documentation and the fact that no amount of coaxing would persuade it to work properly while the Spiceworks product was just too slow to be useful.
Sadly Lansweeper doesn't have any reporting facilities but it uses a MS SQL server to store its data with a relatively simple schema so it is quite easy to knock up your own reporting application.
I think that the developer decided to let the user create reports I must admit I am not that good with SQL and created a link access database to it and use that for reports.
Lansweeper has now been updated to vesion 3.
It has now got reports and all sorts. Only just installed it but is looking very good.
