Different LA = different policy. In my LA, some schools started down the route of their own VLE (in my schools case we were Moodle based).
We were subsequently told that there will be a 'County-wide' Learning Gateway provided by the LA, based upon Sharepoint. We had to stop working on the Moodle project.
It will be interesting to see how it develops, we reckon potential 40,000 users for the Gateway, if they all have 1-10gb data then hosting the service could prove a challenge.
If the proposal to 'centralise' all school servers into a single mega-server farm (as recommended by Partnership for Schools for BSF) ever happens the storage and bandwidth requirements could be even more challenging!

broc: Durham LEA?
We haven't done anything in regards to VLE - they school didn't want to move forward incase it'd be a waste of money and resources and decided to wait for the LEA option.
Your last sentence regarding the server farm - you better believe it.

I might believe you if you said Google/IBM/Sun/etc were going to do it. Otherwise I'd just point and laugh.

Funny, that was my reaction too, and I used to work for IBM. Then I started to explain to the Partnership for Schools consultant why it might not be a very good idea... the response was "why was I worried? after all I would be ok under 'TUPE' anyway".
I gave up at that point.

Got anywhere Indie?
As for backups, given its for the LEA could you just mirror the data at two different locations?

28th November 2008, 10:44 AM #36 When I was still at 6th form (couple of years ago) the school was also a secondary school, each pupil from year 7 to year 13 had 30mb of space, irregardless of what courses, gcses, GCEs etc.
Also USB was disabled right up until I left.

28th November 2008, 10:46 AM #37 50mb each should do it, thats what we have on our VLE.
Some users use more, some less, most none at all
Just make sure the storage system is scalable and you can grow in the real world.

Necro record breaker.... The last reply was two years ago, I highly doubt the context is still active.
