Gutted!
Indeed. It is not that there are charging for it, it is there software after all. It’s the fact that since it was announced in August 2005 there neglected to mention it.Originally Posted by mattpant
Yeah, that is most disappointing! Wouldn't have been so bad, like you say, if it was mentioned way back when they announced that Version 4 was on it's way!

Glad I stuck with the free IPCop and it's faithful addons ;-)
Sounds interesting, will have to have a look at that.Originally Posted by webman

They will also be continuing to release a Censornet Open Source just now with all the functions of the paid for version.
I agree that this has come as a bombshell and Adelix haven't let on about this at all. Does seem that their answer to developing anything is lack of money.

wtf!!!!! I have used Censornet for over two years now and have always recommended it to people and told them to watch out for V4 . I always liked the fact the very useful base was free and you could pay for the image filter and black list updates if you wanted them.
I will be using a home built solution I think I have already had a squid/DG box of my own running and the reason I stuck with censornet was the web interface really. The other alternative is an IPCop/Smoothie with advanced proxy and dansguardian.
Looking at the pricing it is still reasonable for Education (at about £250-£300 for my school I suppose) but lets see how good it is first and what you get for your money
/edit I take it back I didnt see the small text :
Price quoted is for a 12 month license at the discounted rate shown.
Oh no we actually have to pay for stuff!!!!
Sure if you up against the wall budget wise then go for the freeware option.
Otheriwse don't give up on Censornet. The V4 educational pricing appears to be quite good.

Is that 200 users accessing it at one time or 200 total I wonder? plus it's a yearly fee as well.
Ben
How much of the Open Source version is missing in v4?
Here's a comparison chart:- http://www.censornet.com/ezine/CNv4-StatementGPL.pdf
Seems ok - all I'd want is seamless authentification - is that making it into v4 OS??

Thats there special offer, what will the full price be when you renwe next year?
In censornets defence they have for a while been mentioning that they would be cost implications for version 4, but I think the e-mail they dispatched tonight is the first menioning of actual costings.
We have used Censornet here for about 2 years amd been very impressed with it. Now its a tough decision to remain with version 3 or pay for the use of version 4.
As I said, it's not that there are charging for it, it's the fact there never let on about it in over 12 months that gets my back up. Also what happened to the beta testing program?Originally Posted by ITWombat
