Wireless N Speed

Has anybody here used Wireless N yet, and if so what speeds do you get with it?

Standing about 6 feet from the router i get a connection of between 150 Megabits per second and 260 Megabits per second.

When i copy a large file, i'm getting about 4.6 Megabytes per second through it. Now unless i'm wrong, if i do 4600 x 8 = 36.8 Megabits per second, way off 150-260.

I'm using the 5Ghz zone on channel 100 as this is nice a free compared to the cluttered 2.4Ghz. I've used netstumbler to see if there is any interferance and it all looks good.

So is around 5 Megabytes a second throughput "real world" speeds for draft 802.11n ? This cannot be right surely as i get get 2.4 Megabytes a second throughput on our 802.11a wifi which connects at 54 Megabits per second.

1. You have an N card in your client right?
2. Your router is connected using a 1Gbit uplink?
3. Is the server busy doing other things?
4. Is the network busy doing other things?
5. Is the wireless router busy doing other things (ie. other clients?)

As above, also is your client busy doing other things? (internet, emails etc)

Oh, also... Is the device running XP? Or one of the newer ones, which have heaps of issues with network IO?

4. Is the network busy doing other things?
5. Is the wireless router busy doing other things (ie. other clients?)

1. Yes its an Intel 5100 supporting ABGN
2. Yes the router (D-Link 1522) is connected at 1Gbit
3. The server did have other clients connected but performance monitor did not show disk usage going through the roof. Might try another server.
4. It was via the main school network, but there is 1GBit feed to every switch.
5. The wireless router only has this 1 laptop connected.

The laptop i'm using is a fresh install of Windows XP , and another one with Windows 7 on fresh install, no AV, nothing else installed at all. Clean as a whistle.

have you tried downloading the latest drivers for the Intel 5100 I had a tosh with this adapter that wasnt working correctley with N untill I downloaded the latest drivers from Intels website not Toshiba's
