If you can't afford CISCO switch's, what make would you get?
Netgear
3 COM
D-Link
Any other?

Hp pro curves are reputed to be good also 3Com which we used to use were also pretty rigid. What is your budget?
HP Pro Curves
Have a look at the Dell PowerConnect stuff, you'll get an extra educational discount off the prices on their website and i've been nothing but impressed with their kit.
I replaced all our old 10/100 gear with Dell 10/100/1000 switches with no problems at all. The interface is a replica of IOS so it's very easy to get to grips with.
HP Procurve definitly worth the money, wouldent look at anything else but if that is still out of your budget then i would say linksys as this is just a cheap version of cisco kit and its fantastic kit for a good price.

recommend the 2600 and 2800 switches

I'd be another person to jump on the Procurve recommending bandwagon.

Definately Pro Curve thats what all ours are now.

3Com ... mainly for the stacking technology. It means you can get some decently priced core switches which can be split up and rolled out to the edge when you next upgrade the core.
Cisco is not the dear really ... it all depends on who you talk to and what deals you can do.
I've never really looked into the procurves, so I might be way off the mark here, but I just had look at some prices.
The HP 2800 J4903A 20 port 10/100/1000 is selling for around £1000 and the Cisco 2960G-24TC around £1300.
When you're on about not being able to afford Cisco kit and having to save money then the HP stuff doesn't seem that suitable either? I know there are educational discounts to be had on these prices, but I picked up the Dell kit for £500 per switch and they've had fantastic reviews!

3Com here, they are well priced and we have had no problems.
3com here too. There's also some DLink stuff at the primary schools.
Got a full HP Procurve replacement going on this summer.
So we are likely to have a stack load of Planet and Intel switches going for free if anyone wants them in a couple of weeks.
We could get a rebate on the old switches from Ho, but I'd prefer for them to help someone out as the rebate is fairly small
Most of it is 10/100 and the intel stuff is all managed.
Regards
Martin

Procurve for me too
You need to speak to people to get the education discount.
@budgester: I too am pulling a load of Planet switches!
Were Planet switches included free with switch cabinets until 5 years ago?Originally Posted by Ric_

Allied Telesyn make excellent switches, fully featured, at a reasonable price
