Sharing a printer twice?

I have some print monitoring software on the server, but we have some local deskjet type printers. Is there a way that I can connect to the shared local PC, then RE-share it on the server so that I can make the new share the default? That means prints will go to the print server and thereby be logged?

As far as I'm aware you can't easily achieve this, or at least at no cost

We have Print Manager Plus here and I understand that to do this, I would have install PMP on the local machine (and pay for a second licence)

Yes you can do this.

1) Install print services for Unix on both the PC hosting the printer and the Printer Server.
2) Alter the permissions on the PC so that local users can't print to it.
3) on the Printer server add a new local printer. Use an LPR port. The host is the name of the PC. The queue name is the name of the printer (as it appears in the printers & faxes folder). Go though the rest of the wizard setting up the printer as normal.
4) Share your new 'local' LPR printer.
4) Alter your printer scripts so that anyone wanting to use the printer gets the one shared from the print server rather than the pc client.

What would happen in that context if someone logged in and the local machine that the Printer is connected to is off?

Jobs would queue up on the print server until you turned the machine on. As soon as you do that, everything queued would start printing out.

Share the printer on the computer it is attached to, add it to the server, then share it on the server. (You may need to add it to the printer limiting software). Also, on the local computer, give everyone full permissions. Then on the server put the right security. (I put the permissions on the local computer once and it went all funny!! )
