    WIFI AP

    Hi,

I am after 2 new Wireless access points for home. One for the first floor the other for the basement. I have the house wired up with Ethernet so they will both plug into the network.

What can you recommend? I currently have 2 D-Link ones and they are trash. Once keeps dropping packets and the other wont even power on now.

I am thinking Linksys what do you think?

    Thanks

    Z

Linksys or Draytek ( if they do WAP's ? ) Netgear are ok but not sure what other people think to netgear.

Draytek WAPs are very good, but can be expensive. I use a litle ZyXel G-570S - it's wall-mountable and very small and discreet. If you're fussy about cables, I think there is a PoE model too - don't get a PoE switch though, just add a power injector for about a tenner.

    Colubris

I have used and dealt a lot with Colubris WAP's, personally I think they are awesome bits of kit.
They can rated as to handle 100 users, have enough options to confuse even the most techie person but the best bit is they often appear on Ebay and because people dont know what they are they sell for peanuts.
Also run on PoE as well but also have a power socket so you have the choice on how to power them.

I use netgears throughout my house, got 3x dg834gt (even thought they are actaully adsl2 modems, they're so cheap on eBay and they make great access points)

Also I have a Netgear rangemax for the really bad section of the house, and coverage there is literally 10x better since swapping in the rangemax.

Do you all live in huge houses or something? I've got one AP and coverage is brilliant. I wouldn't consider my house to be a shoebox either.

Big old victorian town house, 3ft thick walls with lead pipes through them. Cabled most of the main rooms (that was fun I dont think) but still nice to have wifi for the laptops and wifi phones etc.
