I need to give a single staff machine in a building without network internet access, the buildings are within 10 metres of each other. How can this be done as cheap as poss?
We use 3COM OfficeConnect access points, can it be done using them?

You need your APs to support Wireless Distribution System or something similar.

Well you can do it using WDS or you could use 2 AP's in bridge mode to link the 2 buildings.

Or you could get a length of external-grade cat-5 and string it between the two buildings![]()

Or get a cantenary put up between the 2 and run a length of pre terminated fibre across a 4 core pre terminated fibre is about £65. Plus media converters on the end would give you a proper solution for not a lot more really.

Wouldn't using fibre be somewhat overkill for giving a single machine internet access?Originally Posted by plexer
I would have thought the external grade Cat 5 was the easiest way of doing it - perhaps using a catenary if needed.
Although, if there is a future need for more networked machines in the remote building the fibre makes more sense then.

Well a drum of extrernal cat5 is going to cost you about £75.
Also like you say is there likely to be a future expansion in which case a fibre would be more suited.
You then need a couple of standalone media converters on each end job done.
I still don't like running cat5 externally.
