10th December 2008, 11:07 PM #2 Ive had about 4 of them now, currently got a Smoothwall UTM appliance in on trial and huuuuuuuuuugely impressed by that so suspect that will get bought, tbh with all the issues we have with Sophos I wouldn't be spending money on something else from them at present when I find the Anti-Virus software to be a slow PC hogging product that quite literally cripples PCs with its over-zellous tendencies. Just imagine if it did that to the internet going through it!!!

Seconded
We use Sophos for anti virus and Smoothwall 8 for filtering.
wouldn't go near Sophos again, it is free for us which is the only reason i think we use it. It eats PC power. the amount of trouble on access scanning has caused on our old machines is incredible.

12th December 2008, 08:38 PM #6 We have bought the Smoothwall UTM1000 and we are very impressed with it as well! It took a little configuring, but we are now currently using it on our curriculum and admin networks as well as our seperate VLANed Wireless network.

Don't blame you - it's a shame that quite a few LA's up and down the country have contracts with them.

Give it time, hopefully some of the other AV vendors will lower prices to start to compete with Sophos.
