I'm really confused by this, I've got a new buffalo access point at school which the trolley full of laptops (hp6720s) will only connect to if WPS is enabled. The laptops will not connect before logon for new users if WPS is turned off. I've not needed to configure it just enable it. I've got WPA2 security setup but am worried that WPS may make the ap less secure.

I've got 2 older buffalo AP's that will allow new users to logon, I've changed numerous settings on the laptops, they have static IPs, bios settings correct, latest drivers etc.

in group policy you can set the computer to wait for network connectivity before allowing users to logon, have you tried this?

Yes done that, - if I switch the laptop on in the new AP's range it won't logon, carry it to the other end of school into the range of the older AP it will logon.

The only thing that has made a difference is WPS.

Have you updated the firmware on the AP?

You could try updating the firmware of the AP to the lateset version and seeing whether that fixes the issue. It could be a bug in the firmware.

WPS is only really an easy way for home users to initially setp the a secure wireless connection, I can't see why it would be required to connect unless it is a bug or has been set up to be required in the APs configuration.

Firmware update next week job I think, I've left WPS enabled as it seems to be the only way this particular set of laptops can logon! No other laptop in school is affected.
