One day off in god knows how long and the core cisco catalyst 6500 swith fails.
Swapped out the chassis as (tech guy ran through loads of stuff with my assistant) anyway still same error except if i remove a 48port blade in slot 5.
now boots but all ports say
example
vlan1 IP-Address ok? Method Status
GigabitEthernet 1/1 unassigned yes unset administratively down down
anyone got any ideas on making this work.

29th October 2008, 10:29 PM #2 what do you get if you do
"sh run"
You have probably looked at what the running config is already thought.
Have you loaded your backup config file?
Looks like it could be something to do with the config register it looks like your in password recovery mode. I would take all the cards out of the chassis and gradually put the cards in and build the switch back to the state it should be. I would also be looking at the console as the switch boots IOS and looking if it is starting properly.
Good luck. (I am not CCNA yet!)

try the following;
int range gigabitethernet 1/1 - 48
no shutdown.
This will select a range of switchports and set each port to be administratively up.

29th October 2008, 11:26 PM #4 Use the range command to un shut the ports
inter range giga 1/1 - 48

2nd November 2008, 12:21 AM #7 fixed
We have 4 catalyst 6500 switches and turns out that 3 48 port modules in 3 different switches failed.(power surge maybe , are all on ups though)
So after lots of swapping around Finlay got the 3 dead cars out of way and reloaded configs and now its all up and running.

What ups are you protecting the switches with, 48 port 6500 blades [even the older 10/100 variety] are not cheap, you really should be looking at a beefy UPS that does power conditioning and good quality pdu's.
If you've got the money for 4 catalyst 6500's i'd venture you've got the money for a hardwired UPS with hardwired output circuits to each cab. Might be expensive for electrical install depending on distance but it's by far the best way to protect your equipment.
Surges are only an issue if you go cheap on UPS and pdu's. A three-phase UPS is also much more efficient than smaller, individual ups.
