That by 2008 they want the kids work not to be kept on the schools servers, but on the internet, advantage being that the same work folder follows them from primary school to high school to college etc...
Anybody else heard of this? I found out from our LEA's broadband department.
Although the idea sounds good, it sounds like a nightmare to me.....

I think you are refering to Becta's vision of electronic portfolios and assessments?

Probably they will contract it out to those Ripoff Merchants (RM).

I'm afraid so it's in the goverments "Harnessing Technology" white paper
http://www.dfes.gov.uk/publications/e-strategy/. They want every pupil to have an e-portfolio or PLS personal learning space...

Has anybody told Becta just how stingy VLE providers can be when it comes to storage capacity. If you want 10s of GB to replicate the storage on normal LAN file servers there will probably laugh at you on the way to the bank.

Becta and the DfES have put the ball in the hands of the RBCs and other groups, but have not ruled out that schools have their won solution and tell RBCs etc how to do things ... in fact it is encouraged.
Some RBCs even allow innivative schools to stick on whatever VLE they want as long as it meets certain criteria (single sign on, etc)
I want to look into the idea of mirrors ... we host it, but it is mirrored by the RBC.
But I have to go and chat with some people about this over the next month so that something is in place for when we move to the RBC as our provider.
