Whats the best content filtering system out there?
We currently have our internet connection from the LEA (8 Megabit). Its dire!!
I had the head, assistant head, and the rest of the senior mangment team mad this weekend as we had no connection to site since friday evening until 10am monday morning. E-Mail was the main thing they wanted access too, others needed sims/nova t access for cover, and the kids could not terminal in
Lack of DNS control, being ripped off for DNS changes, only 4 public ips, no control over the firewall are just a few other annoyances.
So we want to get another line in from somebody decent (thinking Zen), and pushing everything through that connection, then lowering the LEA connection down to 2Megabit for things such as SAP access.
Obviously we need decent filtering, our current line has RM Safetynet which is quite powerful. Need somthing like this for this other connection. We have ISA Server 2000 as a proxy cache at the moment, was going to use this for a firewall, but for content filtering on it does not seem that good.
Toying with Censornet 4 Trial, and 3 Open Source. Any others that are good? They need to have a BIG porn blocklist in already really.

Content Keeper
We use Content Keeper. Comes in its own Linux Box. Scalable and can lock individual users down. Huge degree of control. Good value for money.

11th March 2008, 07:20 PM #6 LEA filter is Smartfilter, which is pathetic. Currently using DIY'd Linux box with Dansguardian. We're trialing with a view to buy one of the various smoothwall options (once we've figured out what we want).

Smoothwall Express 2.0 SP1 with the Advanced Proxy and URL filter addons.
We filter the students through this as well as our authority filtering.
It's a doddle to install and is very stable from my experience so far.
For reference I'm running on an AMD Athlon XP 2200 with 1Gig of Ram.
:-)

I got a UTM about a month ago. Well worth the extra cash.
