Need to find out IP Address of switch

Hi, I need to find out the ip address of my hp6108 core switch in order to log onto the console and check the event log.

Any ideas?

Port Scan and look for something with a web interface and telnet interface or use the arp command to bind an IP address to the Mac address which should be labeled on it somewhere. Failing that some of the HP management software will pick it up.

Not sure if it applies to this switch, but most managed switches will have a serial port that will allow you to open up a terminal session and use the command line interface, which you will be able to use to view the ip address.

That is also good advice I forgot about that one. You just have to make sure you find the right cable though as a normal serial cable wont work.

Does the switch have a serial port on it? If so, hook up to that and use the CLI management console on it. Exactly how you do that varies from switch to switch, but the user manual should tell you everything you need to know.

A null modem cable is what you will need IIRC.

Or as mentioned above use something like Angry IP Scanner to scan your network for IPs with port 80 open.

who set your network up? they should have documented the switches ip address + any vlan configuration for you, you can fairly certain its outside of your dhcp scope of addresses so if you know what ip range your school has been allocated and you know what your servers and printers have been staticlly allocated by process of elimination you could assume that your switches will fall either inside or just outside that subnet.

This may help when using angry ip if you have a stack of ip's to wade through, also angry ip won't have a netbios name for a switch.

some hp switches come without default ip's so you assign it as part of the setup routine after connecting to it via the console.

I conected a dull modem(serial to serial cable) to a computer and hyper terminaled to the switch.

I had to do this the other day for a HP Gig switch to find the IP out, grabbed my serial cable and found it out that way.

Solarwinds IP Network Browser works a treat too.

Try the 60 day trial HP Network Manager software plus.

Then let it drop back to the basic version of the software.

If you have more that a couple of HP switches it is worth investing in the full Plus version of the software.

If the switch hasn't had a manual IP address allocated, it will normally pick on up via DHCP.
