Hi All
I'm entering the big bad world of VoIP
Which I intend on putting in our new 6th form build
I am considering using asterisk on it's own box, but I have a few questions:
a) What hard handsets do people use with asterisk
b) How would you integrate an analogue PBX? I'm guessing you need some sort of gateway? Personnaly I would just get rid but it has all the incoming lines hooked into it

We use Grandstream GXP-2000 handsets here, but I would advise against them as they are unreliable in terms of firmware releases and they are have a low quality build to them.
Interfacing with your existing PBX depends on the model. Some you simply won't be able to, others you will via T1 connections between it and an asterisk box.

yea... we have an oldish Ascom Exchange and it cannot be linked to a VOIP.. so we are waiting for it to die before spending 10 to 15 grand on a new VOIP system with Digital Handsets..

I have a couple Linksys SPA942 handsets here.
Build quality appears to be excellent they are basically baby ciscos.
Not tried them out on voip yet as I've still got to install the server.

Re: VoIP
Indeed the Linksys SIP handsets appear to be quite good.
There are a lot of ropey SIP handsets about....
You can get a bit of discount if you are an education establishment and go to a linksys partner.
cheers
