We have recently started using VNC to access the teachers machines in order to solve little problems that they might have, like program installation, and accessing network drives. But when i try to connect to one of the machines i get an error of
it is really starting to annony me as i have looked evrywhere for the answer. i am currently using VNC free edition V 4.1Quote:

That normally happens when you have guessed the VNC password wrong to many times.
I get that on some machines. It only happens when the remote machine isnt logged on. If the machine has a user logged on VNC connects fine. I cant figure out why I can VNC to the login screen on some, and others it just dumps me out with that error and not display the login screen.
Try logging onto that machine and trying to vnc again and I bet it works.
If you find a solution im dying to know.
Have you tried resetting the VNC server service?

Connection refused simply means that for *whatever* reason it can't connect to the port.
1) Windows Firewall is a good culprit.
2) Service not running?
3) On the local machine itself, try and telnet to localhost on port 5900 to see whether that works.
We have VNC on all of our machines here and it works 99% of the time.
the ones that fail on mine actually get to the password prompt, but drops the connection once the password has been entered. So its a different error than the OP. But still infuriating.
what i found was i had the host machine set to only accept connections from port 5920 when i was sending out on port 5900, thanks everyone

Having a very similar issue here, trying to connect to our BMS server via VNC and getting
"connect: Connection refused (10061)"
Using Windows 7, here.
I have connected to it before without a problem before, only last week actually, just a shortcut on the desktop. Double-click, easy as pie.
Rebooting the server is out of the question unless it's literally the only thing that will fix it.
Any suggestions?

I tossed a VNC launcher together in VB .Net 4 a while back and we use this for jumping onto teacher's machines for support. In a nutshell, it'll copy the required files to a temp folder in the C drive, create the registry keys on the client machine, register TightVNC as a service, start the service, and automatically connect the viewer from your workstation the teacher's machine. Once the viewer is closed on your machine, the registry keys, service, and files are removed from the teacher's.
It requires that you have these things configured in the computer you're try to connect to: the remote registry service enabled, port 5900 open on the firewall, remote administration open on the firewall, and Secure Attention Sequence enabled and set to services.
After that you'll be able to freely connect to client machines with, or without a user logged into them. It's still a little rough around the edges and I plan on rewriting a good portion of it soon. I hope some of you here can make use of this...
