Card Readers and Drive Mapping
Hiya guys!
Got a problem, We have had 30 PC's delivered all with card readers....
The one bit of the card reader is the H: drive, which we use H:\ for the user's home directorys, So there home dir's will not map at login?
Any ideas? Apart from take the card readers out :P
Thanks!
Re: Card Readers and Drive Mapping
Can you not change the card reader drive letter via computer management?
We don't have machines with card readers so not totally sure how to give them a different drive letter.
Re: Card Readers and Drive Mapping
Can you disable it in device manager?
Re: Card Readers and Drive Mapping
Hey,
No i looked into changing the drive letter via computer management but it only changes the hard drive letters.
also No we cannot disable individual drives its either card reader is on or off!
Re: Card Readers and Drive Mapping
what do you mean i disable card reader via device manager
Re: Card Readers and Drive Mapping
We got some machines for the Art dept that have card readers, and I had the problem whereby they used up the first 4 drives, which really bugged me.
So I created an extra local disk ( e: ), at about 16mb;
Created 4 folders media1 to media4;
Went into the disk management and firstly removed the current drive letter;
Then mapped each one to a folder ( e:\media1, etc), rather than a drive letter;
I then created a link on the local "all users" desktop to the E: drive;
We hide the C: partition, but they I wanted to stop people saving stuff to the E drive, they still will do, but the small size will stop this.
I'm going to write a startup script for these machines that will erase any files in the root of E:, and folders that aren't called mediax.
:)

YOu can, ive just plugged my card driver in, right clicked my computer, manage, then selected disk management, found the drives for the card reader, right clicked the drives in the bottom section of the window and could change them... without any problems
Re: Card Readers and Drive Mapping
You could just open the case and disconnect the power/data cable from the Card Reader. That'll sort it out. :)

It's a long shot, but if you actually put a memory card into the slot, you might be able to change the drive letter then. I know on my personal computer it has already assigned the drive letter, but it doesn't see it as a working disk until something is physically put into it. It might be the same for you.
In fact, I have just tried it on my computer. I couldn't change the drive letter on an empty slot, but as soon as I put a memory card in the slot I was able to see the drive under My Computer -> Manage and thus change the drive letter. Hopefully it will work for you.

You can change them in Disk Management, but they are not in the top list where it shows the drives quite often they are in the bottom bit below the Hard Drives and Optical Drives.
